There is always so much excitement and activity during the festive time of year, and one of the most loved seasonal traditions has to be Christmas markets. The sights, the sounds, the twinkling lights and the smell of festive treats all come together to create a truly wonderful atmosphere. While Christmas markets are enjoyed by so many, they are not always accessible for everyone to attend. With this in mind, we decided to bring the magic to our doorstep by creating our very own Christmas market at The Old Downs Residential Care Home that everyone could enjoy comfortably, and most importantly, with plenty of festive cheer!
With lots of enthusiasm and careful planning, we put together a plan to make the day as special as possible. Our dining area was transformed into a festive wonderland, beautifully decorated with warm lights which instantly set the scene, creating a welcoming and cosy atmosphere for residents, relatives, visitors and our team members alike.
We were incredibly lucky to have two wonderful local businesses set up stalls at our market. The first was a company called ‘Ynot’ who brought along a fantastic selection of personalised gifts that proved very popular. The second was run by a talented local lady who hand-makes all of her items including cushions, bags, purses, ornaments and many other unique creations. Adding an extra special touch, our residents also had their very own stall, proudly displaying items they have collected over time, as well as beautiful jewellery they made themselves.
Of course, no Christmas market would be complete without some delicious festive treats. We made sure to include stalls offering warming mulled wine and classic mince pies, which filled the room with wonderful seasonal aromas and were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
Before we knew it, opening time arrived, and we were delighted to see a queue of people waiting at the door, eager to start their Christmas shopping. Our residents loved the experience, taking their time to browse each stall, carefully choosing presents for loved ones, chatting with stallholders and enjoying a festive tipple of mulled wine along the way. It was heart-warming to see so many smiles and hear so much laughter throughout the day.
Team members, relatives and members of our local community joined us to enjoy the market, making it a truly inclusive and joyful event. The atmosphere was full of warmth and the day could not have gone better. Everyone had such a wonderful time, and many didn’t want the festivities to end!
