The Old Downs Residential Care Home residents enjoy birthday card crafts and companion time

Birthday card crafting

At The Old Downs Residential Care Home, we love nothing more than celebrating our residents’ birthdays — especially when it’s done with a personal touch. One of our favourite activities is creating beautiful handmade birthday cards, crafted with care by our residents.

Our ladies and gents put so much thought and creativity into each card. Starting with a blank piece of card, they bring their designs to life using drawings, feathers, gems, and all sorts of decorative touches until they’re just right. It’s not just about the finished product, it’s about the joy of making something meaningful for a friend.

After the cards have been proudly displayed in bedrooms, we love to scrapbook them as special keepsakes to look back on.

One-to-one time

Our residents enjoy a wide range of engaging group activities – from parties and seated fitness to singing and dancing sessions, coffee mornings, Cooking Club, arts and crafts, and gardening…the list goes on! While group fun is a big part of life here, we also place great importance on the value of one-to-one time.

This companion time comes in many forms, tailored to each resident’s interests and needs. For some, it means something as simple and meaningful as a daily walk around our beautiful grounds. These peaceful strolls have become a treasured part of the day for several residents, offering a calming time surrounded by nature.

These moments not only support independence and promote physical activity, but also offer precious quality time between our residents and team members. Whether it’s a quiet chat, a moment of reflection, or just enjoying the fresh air together, these walks are a wonderful reminder that the little things often mean the most.
