We were so honoured last week to celebrate the 100th birthday of our beautiful resident Edith here at The Old Downs Residential Care Home, as she marked the occasion in style with a big party, joined by all of her family.
Edith was born on 23 July 1925 in West Ham, East London, and was one of twelve children – ten girls and two boys. She was educated locally at both primary and secondary school and spent time in her childhood hop picking. She was very close to her sisters and they enjoyed caravanning holidays together.
Having lived through World War II, Edith remembers it well. None of her siblings were evacuated, and she recalls spending nights in the shelter during bomb raids. One of her most vivid memories is the joy of VE Day on 8 May 1945, which she frequently talks about. At the age of 17, Edith married her beloved husband Ron on 12 September 1942. Always a hard worker, she learned to drive after the birth of her second daughter and became a van driver for the council’s Meals on Wheels service – a role she took great pride in.
Edith joined us at The Old Downs during a Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, at the age of 95. Since then, we’ve all counted down the years to this milestone birthday! She has made many friends in our Home and is adored by our entire team. She takes part in a wide range of activities and especially enjoys knitting, baking, gardening, arts and crafts, and a good dance!
Edith is incredibly proud of her family and remains very close to them. For her big day, loved ones from New Zealand came to celebrate, and she was surrounded by everyone she holds dear. We enjoyed a beautiful afternoon tea with live entertainment from the talented singing duo PJ & Rose.
And the fun didn’t end there! Over the weekend, Edith’s birthday wish was granted when a pony came to visit her at our Home – an unforgettable moment. She was showered with gifts and received a touching 100 cards for her 100 years, thanks to the wonderful efforts of our sister Homes, whose residents created heartfelt cards especially for her. We are deeply grateful for the love and care poured into each one; they are now treasured keepsakes that will stay with Edith forever.
What a truly special celebration for an absolutely lovely lady. Many happy returns, Edith – we’re thrilled your big day was as wonderful as you are!
